The Food Co-op - Port Townsend
The Food Co-op in Port Townsend, Wash. has a long-standing commitment to local farmers and local businesses, buying locally when available. The Food Co-op is also dedicated to being a stable business and employer in the community, offering affordable organic foods to everyone each and everyday.
We opened in 1972 staffed by volunteers, and in the early years, deliveries were difficult because members went to Seattle to pick up freight. Since then, the co-op has grown and expanded to meet the needs of the community. In 2001, we moved to where we are now located. This led to a big growth spurt that included expanding the kitchen and deli, juice bar, member services desk and adding more check stands. In 2005 members voted in favor of purchasing our building.
Our Product Selection Guidelines are an extension of our mission and values. These product guidelines are offered to provide a framework in which The Food Co-op ideals of good nutrition, respect for the environment, fostering of local production, workplace democracy, and co-operative member ownership will be translated into the selection of goods for the store.
In addition to organic groceries and frozen foods, at the co-op you'll find that our produce department features local and organic produce all year-round. Our deli offers a superb selection of foods prepared daily from scratch using mostly organic ingredients. Our meat department features seafood, poultry and meat that free of added growth hormones, antibiotics, and nitrates. We stock a good assortment of organic and specialty cheeses, beer and wine. The wellness and health and body care department promotes household and personal care products that are environmentally sound and that use no animal testing. We also stock fair trade merchandise and locally made artisan and handcrafted products.
There's plenty of seating inside the deli or outside in our courtyard (weather permitting), where our gardening magician has made a beautiful space for you to meet and gather with friends, or just sit and read a book. We look forward to your visit.
