As a writer and editor in Portland, Oregon, I love buying fresh veggies and other produce from food co-ops and relaxing while my husband cooks. We like experimenting with new recipes, especially ones that are Indian- or Asian-inspired. Fortunately, our son loves spicy foods, too.

My love of fresh, local food goes back to when I was a child and my grandmother fussed over how much summer fruit I consumed, warning me against inevitable stomach aches. It never happened. When you're a kid, a lot of food looks questionable, but my parents always told me I had to try everything put in front of me. Since then, I've eaten everything in sight, and as an endurance athlete I’m served well by my omnivorous ways. So if I'm coming over for dinner, cook anything—just keep your fingers away from my mouth while I'm eating.
